Pre-Ballet

(2 - 3 year olds)

With Care-Giver and Drop off options available

Our goal is to instill a love for dance, movement and music in your little one! Ballet positions and terminology are introduced while students begin to discover their sense of balance, develop gross motor skills and explore rhythm and musicality through the use of games, songs and props, all in a nurturing and fun environment. These classes do not participate in showcase performances, though they are welcome to watch.

Preparatory Ballet

(Ages 6 and up)

By invitation only. Building on the previous levels of Pre-Ballet, this 60-minute class fine-tunes the basic ballet positions and steps and starts challenging young dancers to connect the movements in fuller dance phrases to music. The ultimate goal of this class is to help prepare the young dancer for more intensive ballet training and possible transition into the Manhattan Youth Ballet program. The class format involves basic ballet barre, stretching, center and across the floor combinations and choreography. Students will perform a full ballet dance in the end of semester showcase.

Ballet 3

(Ages 9 and up)

By invitation only. Must have completed Ballet 2 or equivalent. This technique class continues to build on the fundamental positions and movements gained in Ballet 2 while increasing strength and coordination through more complicated exercises, combinations and choreography. Students continue to practice and learn additional ballet terminology, and their translations from French into English. Ballet 3 will perform one ballet piece in the Spring Recital only.

Pre-Ballet

(3-4 year olds, 4-5 year olds, and 5-6 year olds)

This 45-minute class introduces and builds on basic ballet vocabulary, and the positions, shapes and movements of dance, while introducing the basic components of a dance class—warming up, free-range movement in the center of the room, and across-the-floor movement. Children will experience individual and group dance time with different types of music and rhythm. One full ballet dance will be performed in the end of semester showcase.

Beginning Tap

(Ages 6 and up)

Dancers will be introduced to basic tap vocabulary, rhythms, steps, combinations and choreography. Students will work on listening skills and will develop their sense of rhythm and musicality while strengthening their tap sounds, quality and clarity. A full tap dance will be performed in the end of semester showcase.

Beginning Jazz

(Ages 6 and up)

This one hour class introduces jazz basics and technique through center-work, strength and flexibility exercises, across the floor progressions and choreography. Students will perform a jazz dance in the end of semester showcase.

Pre-Ballet

(6-7 year olds and 7-8 year olds)

This class begins to move toward the longer Preparatory Ballet class by incorporating more specific ballet vocabulary, combining movements, and introducing the standard classical ballet class format. Children will continue their exploration of different rhythms, music, choreographic combinations and spatial movement. One full ballet dance will be performed in the end of semester showcase.

Ballet 1

(Ages 8 and up)

By invitation only. Must have completed Preparatory Ballet. Ballet 1 is a technique class that follows the structure and progression of a basic classical ballet class. Class begins with work at the barre where students practice proper alignment and balance, and work to build strength and coordination with simple exercises. Each class also includes center exercises that reinforce lessons learned at the barre, and combine movements into simple variations. Detailed explanations of technique and theory, and hands on corrections from the instructor,  help students learn and demonstrate an increased technical understanding of the fundamental positions and movements in classical ballet. Students also learn and practice beginning ballet terminology, and their translations from French into English. Ballet 1 will perform one ballet piece in the Spring Recital only.

Preparatory Jazz

‚Äč

Preparatory Jazz is an invited class for those ages 6 and up who demonstrate an aptitude for potential participation on the MMAC Jazz Dance Team. The one hour class introduces jazz basics and technique through center-work, strength and flexibility exercises, across the floor progressions and choreography. Students will perform a jazz dance in the end of semester showcase.

Pre-Ballet/Tap Combo

(3-4 years, 4-5 years, 5-6

Our popular 1 hour class introduces students to both basic tap and ballet techniques. Typically, the first 20-25 minutes are spent tapping up a sweat. Then, children quickly change their shoes (with a little assistance from the teacher if necessary) and stretch for about 10 minutes. Then we transition into ballet. Both tap and ballet portions consist of center work and across the floor. Both a full ballet dance and a full tap dance will be performed in the end of semester showcase.

Ballet 2

(Ages 9 and up)

By invitation only. Must have completed Ballet 1 or equivalent. Ballet 2 is a technique class that builds on the fundamental positions and movements gained in Ballet 1, with the structure, progression and discipline of a classical ballet class. Barre work includes continued emphasis on proper alignment and balance, but works to build strength and coordination through more complicated exercises. Basic arm and head positions, including épaulement, are learned in order to increase the student’s technical understanding of more advanced movements in classical ballet that will carry into center exercises and more complicated variations.  As students demonstrate increased proficiency in alignment and balance, they are able to learn proper execution of turns such as pirouettes. Students continue to practice and learn additional ballet terminology, and their translations from French into English. Ballet 2 will perform one ballet piece in the Spring Recital only.
